5 pointed star ? What does it stand for ?
Speaking of new england decorating . I have been looking at alot of houses in Maine hoping to get some idea what would be best for us. Cape, Colonial, Victorian, etc. The thing I keep coming across that I dont know what is means are all of the 5 pointed stars. They are used on the outside of the house as well as the interior. In my world they are the pentagram or pagan symbol. I'll bet that's not the meaning there. please help,

I think you are referring to what are "Barn Stars". I don't know what they were originally used for, but I bought one in Pennsylvania. Just for decoration.
I think it was a good luck or good fortune thing, kinda like a horseshoe.

Very intersting and very helpful MSINA; I was wondering as I see them on many of the houses on realtor's pages. I don't see them at all out here in California.

My next quilt I think will be a star quilt. I did one years ago, my daughter has it on her bed. That was a rather simple "Ohio Star" , I'd like to do something a bit more intricate, and as the stars are so popular, I believe it would be nice to do.

A compass rose is entirely a different thing. Four points, eight points, or sixteen points; showing the cardinal directions to steer by. [North, North by North East, North-East, East by North-East, East, and so on.]

However there is a sorority that is popular in Maine that uses a five pointed star as their symbol: The Order of the Eastern Star.
General Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star
There are a number of chapters local to where we settled [Old Town, Orono, Milford, Le Grange, Orneville, Howland, Brewer, Bangor-their building burnt down three years ago but they will soon get a new one built, ...]
