Central to North NM are not as warm as one might imagine. Today, it is snowing on and off, and the temperature has fallen considerably--hovering around 40F, I believe. The difference in temperature between Taos (where I am) and Albuquerque is generally many degrees--warmer. In the southern portion of NM you can get very warm weather, similar to Arizona. You might check around Las Cruces for those winter months as it is a lovely town (or city) smaller in scale than Santa Fe, but with some of its pleasures. However, it is beastly hot in summer (above 100F).
Other than Las Cruces, Santa Fe, and Taos environs, I find New Mexico uninviting, especially as I compare it, unfavourably, to New England. While the landscape is often breathtaking, the towns are poorly planned and not very attractive. Others may disagree, and certainly NM has a good reputation for beauty (see NY Times Travel section of last week for a glimpse of how others see this area). I believe the article talked about D. H. Lawrence and his little ranch about 25 miles north of here. While the light is remarkable, and helped establish its reputation, the reputation has become overblown and the amenities one takes for granted in the NE are unattenable.
I have been on many occasions to Belfast, and while I don't know it well, it has some special appeal to me. I shan't be looking to trade winter for winter, however

and I will undoubtedly not be able to come to the NE until Spring.
But feel free to ask any questions you'd like and I shall try to answer them as well as I can.
