You have separated the state into your area and the southern part. The southern part of the state is as valid as is your part. You just have to be a little less ethocentric and defensive. I have no problem if you choose not to read my posts. That's on you, but I didn't think I had to clear content with you.

paul, you do make generalizations,,that rubbed me the wrong way too,, about taxes,,and you have at least two on here now that gave you two great examples of lower tax rates from different parts of the state,,yet ,,you still hold your false premise that maine taxes are very high(and we are still livin in maine), yes some towns they may be high,,but not everywhere as you implied.
paul,,for the past 15 years, ive travelled the whole state of maine, met thousands from all parts and id still never make a broad brush statement like, i know what maine is and i know what maine is not..
people see what they want to see....
cheer up a bit paul, its the holidays!! and yes even in maine,,we can still have a nice and white christmas

If control isn't an issue, what in the world is your "teacher" comment all about? Now that's just petty.

I'll search through my comments on southern Maine and check, but see, I enjoy all of Maine. I've also spent a considerable amount of time in southern Maine, so it's unlikely that I've said anything negative.
The control comment has nothing to do with the teacher comment. I find it odd that a teacher wouldn't notice a spelling mistake, especially concerning a common name....that's what that comment meant....and I'm a teacher, so I'm just basing that on personal experience and the experience of working with many teachers.
Anyway, we're off-topic.....all this will be gone shortly.

All you say is true. There simply aren't a whole lot of people who want to pursue that lifestyle. If there were, they would be there. N'est pas?

I'm sorry if I sounded defensive Paul but, when it is said "Because no one in there right mind wants to live in an area where it's winter almost 12 months of the year. I can't even take the 6-7 months of winter we get in Portland." as I'm trying to be positive, it does kinda bug me. The comment was not to you and I'm sorry if you thought it was. If you look back, it was a response to the previous post. I know a wee bit about Maine, I love the whole state but prefer at this time of life to live a quieter pace as I have found here, (in a rental with my dog)

I am gonna bite the bullet and step in here. I know its offtopic, but gosh dang it, you all are quick enough to trashtalk the area beneath your so called Volvo Line. Yes, we jest about it, but stop and think. What Paul has said really is no different than comments others have made about southern Maine/northern Mass. While some laugh, those comments do sting.
Off my soapbox now.

This northern maine/ southern maine stuff drives me nutz! How I wish we could just let it go. At one point in our history we fought a war to preserve the Union and to determine if any nation so conceived , so dedicated could long endure. In each of our town squares in Maine and across the North East, there are cannons and monuments to those who died in that war to preserve the Union and to the principle that there is more that unites us than divides us. Each of the 50 states holds people of diverse beliefs, life styles, economic and political persuasion--our country is divided on a multitude of real differences--BUT we have more in common and we need one another--or we would dissolve into a Baltic map of ineffectual city states and autonomous regions. Surely the good folks who live in Caribou can find some shared sense of identity with those who live in Scarborough and the folks in Lovett can get along with those who live in Eastport. The Chevy's and the Volvo's can drive on the same Maine turnpike. Maine needs the rugged individualists of the north woods just as it needs the urbane residents of Portland and vicinity. This we/they thing could lead to ridiculous divisions like the contest between Lubec and Eastport as to which is the most easterly point of the continent. So Lift your Steins to Dear Old Maine and Shout till the Rafters Ring....." and lets get along and be respectful and grateful for the many facets that make the gem shine.

Elston Deah, I may tease about the "Volvo Line" but I have family From Falmouth to New Brunswick. I tease my brother about it as well as he moved from Bingham to Falmouth 3 years ago, and he calls me "Ma Kettle" because like my Mum, I like the more rural areas. On our way home this past August I could have kissed the ground in Kittery!! I honestly haven't anything against the southern part of the state, it's just for the most part it's a bit much populated for me,... I'm just a simple country person. I love the rural areas of Kentucky and West Virginia as well. (I'm just a big old HICK)

And I wouldn't want you any other way! I was a bit preachy for which I apologize--I have no right---but I sensed some people's feelings were getting hurt and the negativity seems so unnecessary.
As for me, I have lived in great cities and I have lived in upscale neighborhoods, but I have also live in houses without plumbing and in small towns where the brass band played concerts at the bandstand and people sat in their cars and tooted their horns for applause. I found something to love about all those circumstances.
