After witnessing my neighbors this morning I am reminded of something else....shovel your sidewalk, steps, etc. after it snows, not during.

Another thing; do not attempt to pass snowplow trucks on the highway. The plows are wider then the truck and the ends of the plow may not be visible to you. Many accidents are caused by this. Stay back, stay alive.

The season opens on January 1 for most lakes. It is safe to walk on my lake now, but nort safe for a snowmobile. The problem is that most lakes have inlets and outlets with moving water under the ice. That area can open up in February. You need to know the lake where you want to ride. They are all different. Just because you see a snowmobile track does not prove it is safe. All it proves is that somebody made it across. I remember the sick feeling I got when I walked along a snowmobile track and the track stopped at a hole in the ice. I learned later that the guy got out and survived. Some don't.

K-Luv, excellent point about not over doing it with the layers and inside temps. Since moving here to Maine I have developed chronic Hives none as Cholinergic Urticaria. When it is cold out and I enter a warm building with in 5 minutes I break out in very burning itchy patches that take 2 hours to subside. It has something to do with the constant rapid change in body temp. I have always been healthy, exercise every day etc. The cold never bothered me and I love snow, but now I have to take Zyrtec everyday and dress for 50 degree weather when going out so that when I do get to where I'm going I won't be too hot when I get inside. Sounds stupid I know, but it exists and requires trips to Allergists and dermatologists on a regular basis.

Newbies should take caution in the rain here as well. The turnpike and 295 both have deep grooves worn into them that hold water and it is very common to see cars in the ditch because of hydroplaning.
