Ohio is #46! We are kicking Alabama, Mississsippi, Kentucky, and West Virginia's butts!

The only thing that makes me happier then living in Maine is not having to live anywhere else.

Maine is a safe place too. According to the FBI, Maine is the safest state.

"So what bedevils West Virginia?"
Steep slopes, flash floods and acid runoff from old coal mines for starters.

WV has a lot of similarities with Maine. They are both small, poor states. The economy was primarily based on coal, where people worked in mines or in companies that support mining, like railroads, equipment suppliers, trucking, river transport, and things that support populations, like grocery and clothing stores. Meanwhile, all the REAL profits went to the out-of-state cola company owners. (Sounds a lot like Maine's timber and paper industries, doesn't it?) Automation has decreased mining employment to a fraction of what it was in the 1950's. The market for coal is declining, not because the EPA wants to write new rules, but because natural gas is cheaper. Like Maine, there is no plan in place to replace the one big industry that supports the economy. Thus, WV stays poor.

WV is pretty much covered with mountains, so there is not enough flat land to make any large industrial size farms. (Sound familiar?) The mountains do provide wonderful scenery and great skiing. There are four great ski resorts. The mountains make some of the rivers first class places for whitewater rafting. There are a couple of places with Class 6 rapids, as good as any in the east.

The southern part of the state is currently suffering the poorest conditions as a result of the downturn in the coal business, while the northern part of the state has had some federal government facilities provide some fairly large employment opportunities. The Treasury Department has a center in Parkersburg, the FBI has a fingerprint center in Clarksburg that employs several thousand people and the CIA has a facility in Martinsburg, which is only an hour's commute to Washington, DC. Some of those facilities were built where they are as a result of the lobbying by Senator Robert C. Bird. It will be a long time before anybody like that comes along again.

West Virginians seem to repeatedly elect politicians that do not act in their best interests or ever develop a long term plan to lead the state out of poverty. So, WV stays on the bottom of the list.

Besides, after 150 years, people across America still think West Virginia is part of Virginia! They ask us if we live near Richmond, or tell us they have a cousin in Newport News.
