We are looking to move back to Maine ( we were originally in mid-coast Maine). We had to relocate to the Boston area for work but my husband now has the ability to work from home a few days a week. We thought York, Maine might be a good option for commuting a few days a week to the city.

Any thoughts about living in this area? We drove through recently and liked it overall. Just looking for more information about whats good and whats bad.

York is a nice beach town but for me it would be way too crowded in the summer. Have you considered the Portsmouth NH area. That might be a much easier commute to Boston.

As with all bedroom communities around every major city, I would suspect that morning and evening traffic would be horrendous.

Would you be able to use the train?

Wells, has the seacoast community plus lower taxes AND the Downeaster train to Boston. It's a little less crowded than York as well.

This was my first thought as well.

Right now the train is having some on-time issues due mainly to track and bridge work on the MA/NH border, but in general it would be my first go-to for a York/Boston commute, unless your husband's MA work location isn't in downtown. Going down I-95 in the morning, anything south of Wakefield, MA, southbound, will be an awful chore.
