Question Why do retirees choose Maine over other States for retirement?

It seems to me if a retiree has more than $18,250 in earnings a year that they would choose New Hampshire or another State that would not tax them at 8.5%, which is where the tax rate lands when you earn over the $18,250 in salary or investment earnings from those stocks. Yet tons of retirees are moving to Maine. Are they living on SS and pensions? Do they have no earnings from their investments to tax?
So exactly why are so many retirees choosing Maine over their neighbor New Hampshire I wonder? Anyone have any insight on this subject?

Life is not always about money. The beauty and wonderful people in Maine have a value that isn't necessarily measurable in dollar terms but certainly make me choose Maine over New Hampshire. Not that there's anything wrong with New Hampshire.

I'm curious. Where did you get your data?

Life is Maine is the way we like it. We will have two pensions and initially one social security payments. A couple more years and we'll have two social security payments. We also have an investment account. We like Maine better than New Hampshire.

It's not always about money, it's about personal choice.

Parrotpaul: If you go to retirementliving.com and click on Taxes by State, you can find any tax information about any State you wish. FYI.

Sorry, it isn't the tax data that interests me, it's more about your statement about tons of retirees choosing Maine over NH.

As the others have stated, life isn't always about money. The Maine way of life, all of its beauty, the friendly people, and yes reasonable cost of living, make Maine very desirable for active retirees.

I like New Hampshire, but Maine will always be home.

I've made this statement several times - it's a lifestyle change, not just a change of scenery. You have to know exactly what you're looking for. It certainly is NOT right for everyone, and it's the only place on Earth that is right for some!

I loved the statement I saw on a documentary recently: "From Away is a Maine centric phrase. There's Maine, and then there's everywhere else!"
