They spent most of the winter in the treehouse with a friendly wild turkey, and are now finishing up a really cool bathhouse, nestled against the big rock ledge to the side and under the treehouse. Jim does the elderhostel workshop for making a stone/brick bread oven, and has been swamped with requests for private parties etc. I believe within a few years the whole 6 acres will be a fantasy camp with treehouses, driftwood gardens, brick ovens and rocking horses made out of barrels. They fear that soon they will be drawn into building code/permit issues, and try to avoid the kind of notoriety that their particular genius deserves.

The conveniently left out part was that we met Jim and got invited to come up and see the treehouse by being peeping Tom's at his workshop while he was inside!

I was checking out the old 1938 Dodge mini bus that used to be used to bring the workers to the canneries that he had parked in there.

Yeah, yeah, likely story. Jim and his wife's warm and welcoming attitude just reinforced why I want to move to Maine!

I found some old pics taken in the mid 80s, this one is my great uncle Kenny Malloch's old shack at the ferry landing. It was a sad day in Eastport when it was torn down. My dad, someone in a raincoat and Kenny Malloch in the boat.

Here is a pic of a ship passing by the Cannery restaurant before it became the Chowder House, note the absence of the fuel tank and granite block seawall, the old shack was torn down to allow room for the ferry when the block was installed.

Visting St. Michael's Mount will teach you about tides, if you don't already know. They tell you that the causeway that leads to the island is not underwater when the tide goes out. What they don't tell you is that there's not enough time to walk all the way out to the island--or from the island to the mainland--before the tide rolls back in. They just wait until you show up and then charge you to take a boat. But it's still worth the trip. Just be prepared for a pilgrimage.

oh Casper that looks wonderful.... I found this: About St Michael's Mount, Cornwall (http://www.stmichaelsmount.co.uk/about.htm - broken link) I'd never heard of it before and did the google thing!

woxy, it's funny how you look at photos sometimes and realize "wow, that really isn't there!" When I picture that cove in my mind the shack is there... and I miss how the "Cannery" used to be, including that old, huge bar on the second floor I spent a lot of time there waitressing through high school and college!

The Cannery was the first restaurant we went to, I think I still have the old menu(I used to save stuff like that). The first restaurant in Eastport, I mean...

I used to have the recipe for "cannery pie" tucked away.... it was in my mom's recipe box. I should see if I could find that--I've never had anything like that before or since! It was an apple/walnut/touch of cinnamon type torte-like--geez, it's beyond words and sooooo good!
