Default Wiscasset region?

Hello, all.

I am considering putting in for a job in Wiscasset. I do not know what my chances would be of obtaining the position, but before I apply, I would like to ask for some info.

My concern is that while Wiscasset certainly looks beautiful, the job does not pay terribly well (30K+ per year). Bigger than that concern is the fact that Wiscasset is small and expensive looking.

I have no problem with a small town but I fear that it would be difficult in a place that size to find a rental until we could find a house and even more-- that we'd never be able to afford a house there.

So, I guess my question is-- are there any places within commutable distance (within 30 miles or so) of Wiscasset that are more affordable and might have more housing options and availability, especially rent houses?

Lewiston looks like it might be the best bet as far as cost of living, but I hear a lot of negative things about Lewiston. I believe Brunswick is closer to Wiscasset than Lewiston is, but it also seems very pricey.

I have a family of 5. I am not sure if we'd be looking for a house straightaway. We'd first have to get a feel for the area and see if we could afford it or even like "Maine life" as much as we believe we would.

I know there are places in Maine where 30K would be livable, but I'm just not sure any of those places are anywhere near Wiscasset.

The same job in many other states would pay much better, but again the cost of living in some of these states might defray the extra income and level things out in that regard.

I appreciate any help, advice or info.

Thanks so much!

PS-- I have a similar opportunity in Camden, but have the same questions and concerns about that town as well. Again, any thoughts are welcomed and appreciated.
