I have some of the ACTUAL stuff on my porch... I haven't gotten to putting it up yet -- but have been informed it is a no-no in ME (invastive species and all) so we will have to make do with the virtual stuff...

It is the Eastern Dwarf Mistletoe (Arceuthobium pusillum) which is the problem in Maine, not its "kissing cousin" American Mistletoe. The dwarf mistletoe affects primarily spruce trees in the coastal areas and is not considered a threat to inland forests.

It can take several decades to actually kill the host tree. If a mature infestation is found, it is recomended to clear all spruces within 60 feet of the infestation as this is the distance that the EDM can shoot its sticky seeds.

American Mistletoe is found from New Jersey south and west, don't know if it will grow at all in ME. Unlike EDM, it is not particular about its host and will thrive in any type of tree. EDM seems to be particular to fir, mainly spruce.

The trees out here in California are hung with balls of mistletoe....I believe it is an invasive species as it is so plentiful (and parasitic I believe). Pretty though.

It is semi-parasitic, however, it can also be beneficial as it provides nesting, protection and food for a number of bird and animal species. In some areas, cattlemen consider it an "insurance" crop and it is harvested when other types of feed are sparse.
