I live here on the Lake and love it. It can be wild like the ocean at times. You can take a boat from Sebago Lake up through to Long Lake. That's quite a trip to have. I grew up on the ocean and do miss the salt air and the vastness of the ocean. YOu do have to watch the tides when on the ocean and also know where you are going. There can be that fog and then you are lost.
I like one of the answers here. flip a coin. I think both have the pluses and the minuses.
On Sebago it's up to where the place is that you can rent. The traffic can be a mess during certain times of the day, but most of us know when it is safe to go out there on the roads and get from point A to point B without the hassel of traffic. I am sure there are traffic issues on the ocean in areas of where rentals are also. I would say not as much as you would find in the sebago lake region since many homes are rented at a week at a time. The move in is Saturday afternoon and out is in the mornings. Wow, then watch out for all going to their destination home. If you don't have to stop at a rental agency to sign in then you have it made.
Good luck and I bet you will make the right decision for you.

I vote for ocean. The smell of the salt air is great, more places to go by boat.

Default Phippsburg

Phippsburg is very quaint and quite beautiful! The mouth of the Kennebec River is a lively spot for boaters. You can watch the seals play right from shore at Fort Popham. Popham Colony is a lovely place in the summer, and the gorgeous beach is right there! If the place comes with a dock then the tide is seldom a factor.
Enjoy!

Having lived on or near the ocean my entire life (until now) I can tell you there's some pros and cons...
The pros are obvious.
The cons are:
wicked winds that are bone chilling.
fear of storms and flooding.
insurance rates are incredible...if you can even get insured at all.
loads of people in the summer.
very damp house.
salt water damage to your house (pitted windows from sand etc)

Good luck in your decision!
