There were plenty of them around when I was fiddleheading in the Pownal,Yarmouth area a couple of weeks ago, though when I was trout fishing last week they were not too bad. I think the cold nights have killed off some of the first hatch. The mosquitoes however, are starting to replace the blackflies!
Ben's 100 pure DEET, it may kill you but you won't be bitten to death.

The black flies are now gone in the White Mt. area of Oxford County... but their presence remains on over 20 places on my body in the form of nasty, itchy bites (despite DEET and 3 layers of clothing). Now the mosquitoes have arrived and very soon, the deer flies. yippee...

We have some of the little buggers here now. Not a lot, but they still can be annoying. They always seem to want to crawl into your ears for some reason. Hate 'em with a passion. The mosquitoes aren't too bad yet though.

Deer flies are the worst! They take quite a chunk out of you! Green headed horse flies near the ocean can be a real problem too. Just two of them working together can lift a man clean out of his clammin' boots!

A moose fly landed on me yesterday. Isn't this very early?

Saw my first dragon fly today and it's only May. I love them. They eat black flies and mosquitos too. I sure enjoy having a squadron of them around me just picking black flies out of the air.

We have a zillion dragonflies that hold court on the perimiter of the lawn in the high grass. They wait paitently for the sun to go down then strike! They do a great job of keeping the mosquitoes at a tolerable level! If you don't have dragonflies buy some and hatch them out! They are great!
