I had an absolutely awful experience at Helen's in Machias a few years ago and have never been back. Have you been there recently? Has it improved?

I have to agree with you Cape, when we were there in October , we stopped by for lunch. It was nothing fancy as you say, but it was a good little place to stop and eat.
We also ate at The Liberal Cup in Hallowell and it was a good place too.

Default Good Eats around Eastport

Well, we love to have breakfast at the WACO (on the water in Eastport) in the back where we can look out at the water. We were there Sunday and it was snowing and so lovely. Their food is not fancy-but home cooking and affordable. We used to go to a place in malibu, ca that was similar but would put our pocketbook back 4 times as much for less food.

We also like the Nook & Cranny Restaurant that is out RT 9 about four miles.
Looks like a little dive diner but a friend recommended it to us and said the cook from the Chandler House Restaurant in Calais bought it and now cooks there. It had great food and great number of menu choices and everything looked good.

We have been there several times this year and it has been good. Husband swears by the haddock burger and won't eat anything else. Give em another shot-good eating (at least on the few items we have tried).

MaineWriter reports:
"That's my favorite place to meet my dad for breakfast."

No doubt we have met then, like two ships passing in the night. My handle is on my hat, on my truck and often on my vest. Say hello next time.

Regarding Helen's, It's a little out of my territory. I have eaten there four or five times in Machias and it was a fine meal every time. I had lunch in the new one in Ellsworth once and it was very good also.

OMG! How could I forget Bolleys? There is one in Waterville too, and between the hot dogs and those french fries...yummmmm. Don's in Augusta has great fries too.

Jeesh, it is really an emergency that we get back home. I'm starting to forget about some of my favorite places! Not good!!!

The Fat Cat Deli in Machias has excellent sandwiches and pizza. It is right on main street.
