Maine ends year with 21 homicides - Boston.com (http://www.boston.com/news/local/maine/articles/2008/01/01/maine_ends_year_with_21_homicides?rss_id=Boston.co m+--+Maine+news - broken link)

If I was governer running for president I'd say " I am tuff on crime and as a matter of statistical fact, my state, while I was governer, saw more than a 12% decline in Homicide"...Or maybe Id use "violent crime".

It is rare for Maine to have homicides where the people involved do not know each other. We had the lunatic that killed three people at the bed and breakfast in western Maine. Six were drug related. The other 12 were among family members, ex-boyfriends etc.

That doesn't tell the whole story...Drug killings were way up from previous years. I believe it was 5 separate killings that were drug related. That includes the one in Saco where Shra and this other clown gunned each other down with AK47 assault rifles. One of them was gunned down and the other one shot himself after a standoff with police. Either way it was good because both people that were killed were scum bags.

WI ended the year with 764, up 16 from last year. Yet, they don't seem concerned about it.

Sure wish I had Dorothy's Ruby slippers...

I say that is a low number. It is for the ENTIRE state of Maine. I live in Naples, Florida and we had 6 just in a three block area of where I live. I can't wait to get home.

Dh just told me last night that about 5 miles from our house, 4 people were shot on NY eve. I think it's significant that murders are so few in Maine that everyone can recount the details of most them at will. Murder in our area is just another day in Houston....sad, but true. Most of them don't even end up on the evening news unless they really stand out for some reason - most don't.
