Logs split easier from the bottom up. Now, I'm not pulling anybody's leg. It's true. If you have a log with no knots, either end is OK. If you have a log where a limb or branch was located the log will most definitely split easier from the bottom. Take some time in the woods and look at trees where the limb or branch emerges from the trunk. The top side of where the branch emerges from the trunk looks different from the under side or bottom.

Just picture the letter 'Y' or the crotch of a tree. It will split better from the bottom of the Y because the grain diverges from the axe or slitting maul. In order to stay alive a living tree must be very split resistant from above. That protects the tree from snow loads on branches, nearby falling trees and climbing children

I have a programmable thermostat and during the day it is set on 68, at 9 PM it kicks down to 65, then at Midnight it goes to 61, at 3AM it goes back up to 65 and at 6AM it returns to 68. It is the same for all 7 days of the week. I used to have it just make a drop from 68 to 63 at 9:30PM then back up to 68 at 5:30 AM during the week and a little different times for the week-ends. I like the new way I have it set because it seems to save a bit more fuel oil and the lower temps during that time frame has us all sleeping a bit better.

7 inch? LOL, child's play. I've been splitting 28 inch diameter oak, by hand- wedges and a maul to start.

sorry my English is not clear, what i mean was, lucky i have enough logs 7" and under, i do not have to split them.
I have wedge and maul, but it not shape enough to cut in to log, just bounce back when i tried to used them.
What easier to split green or dry log.

Sharpen the edges of the wedges and maul. If they are *very* dull, start with a coarse file, then a fine one. You can finish with a stone if you want (I don't bother).

I think drier is easier to split. When green and moist, the fibers tend to cling together more (especially some type of Maple that smells like a wet horse when split green).

Well I guess the settings are different for winter (when this thread was started) than July when everyone shuts their thermostat down to it's lowest setting!!! Some threads are better left dead!
