Lewiston and Auburn are really depressing towns, the Somali population is their only redeeming feature.

Just curious, but why do you say the Somalis are a redeeming feature? Could you be more specific? Thanks

It's a change in the monoculture we have going on in this state.

I would agree with previous posters that your attitude towards the community and your lifestyle will factor more than your skin color. I am a woman of color and I've been married to an East Machias native for years. I have traveled back and forth from the area and lived there for less than a year. We have always intended to eventually live there,( still lots of DH's family Downeast) but it becomes more of a question of economic logistics than culture. Since 1980 I have seen an uptick in the number of people of color in the area, but it is still largely mainstream White America. But it is small town America , which I find much more welcoming and less assigned to bias.

By the way, I have a number of relatives in Cambridge, MA, too. Maybe we know some folks in common.

I do not think that taking several thousand refugees from one specific country and placing them in a town of 36,000 or so, population is a good idea. If these refugees were placed in a big city like NYC or Boston that would be different. But for a small, struggling town to absorb all these new people from one culture at the same time, is problematic. This would be the case whatever their race or culture was. IMO

Agreed.

It would be like taking a few thousand rural Maine white folk and dropping them in a small town in Somalia. Would it be wrong to take a similar attitude and say that Somalia needs to become more diverse???

We don't question why there aren't a lot of whites in many African countries.......why do people question why there aren't a lot of blacks in Maine???
