On your vehicle; yes, every year. The newer and fancier the vehicle, the higher the excise tax every year.

P.S. Papers are on their way.

Thanks again Scott. You don't want to buy a 2007 Kia do you?
I knew there was a reason we only had old cars and trucks in Maine.

Do you have to pay excise tax even if you purchase your vehicle in Maine?

Yeah, the excise tax is seperate from other taxes. It's paid on a yearly basis. Doesn't matter where you bought the vehicle.

This is on top of the sales tax the first year. You pay excise tax on the sticker price. If your new pickup lists for $38,000 and you paid $24,000 you pay the excise tax on $38,000. It is Maine's program to keep clunkers on the road.

A Texan stopped beside the road and a Maine farmer was fixing his fence. The Texan asked how many acres the farmer had.

Mainers says, "I have 38 acres including the low ground."

The Texan said, "Why it takes me all day just to drive around my place."

Without even looking up the Mainer replies, "Yup. I had a car like that once."

Excise tax has to be paid every year, before registering a vehicle. My 1999 Monte Carlo has reached the minimum value that is taxable, which is $85.00 add $24.00 for the plates and town fees misc. It comes to about $ 125.00 a year for an older vehicle. Now my Silverado is 2002 and the excise tax is $138.72 for a total of $178.72. But don't forget , insurance is mandatory here and you have to show proof when you register.

Vehicle insurance in Maine is a bargain because there are over 40 companies to choose from, auto theft is very low and odds are that a vehicle you hit is a clunker.

Pretty easy. They don't pull your wheels and brake drums off to look at brake shoes. No emissions testing. It costs $12.
