That's it. Thank you, except that my wheel was still on the hub and the hub was undamaged. I wanted to keep from damaging the hub so I set the wheel with no tire on the birch log.

Thank you all for your replies, and sorry for my late response. I currently live in Virginia and miss the northern small town vibe, I am from Saranac Lake, NY and miss the weather, mountains, and lakes, but am looking for something new, I've been looking at Vermont and Maine for somewhere similar to the ADKs but unique itself. Greenville probably reminds me the most of the ADKs but is very small and I'm sure finding a job there isn't easy. Farmington looks interesting, and has a young population (I'm in my early twenties), and it seems very close to the mountains and lakes. I am not a fan of the money and tourism that is lake placid, and I can relate to the Maine ingenuity story. I am looking for change in my life and wanna get back to more rural living, but at the same time I want to be somewhere that has decent employment opportunities, your replies have given me a better perspective of northern Maine towns. I am still open to any suggestions that anyone has. Thanks again.

Lake Placid has a Population Density of 1,792/sq mi. Maine's largest city [Portland] has a Population Density around 50% more [3,100/sq mi], most of Maine enjoys Population Densities between 1 and 10 people / sq mile. So Maine does have an area more urban than Lake Placid, though most of Maine is far less urban.

Lake Placid's median household income is much higher than that of Maine.

If you're looking for a place similar to Lake Placid, Northern New York would be a good place to start.

As far a job availability, it really depends on the type of job you want and your qualifications. My friends and relatives who work in health care never seem to have trouble finding a job. I know someone who needs a medical assistant right now in the Wilton/Farmington area. There is also the University of Maine--Farmington.

If you are serious about coming to Maine and must work for a living, start with the Maine.gov website, and click on "Jobs & Employment." Next, jobs in Maine websites, online newspapers, etc. Maine has plenty to do outside. Maine is Vacationland, doncha know. You can always drive to the "big" city if you feel the need. Once you see what jobs are available, then you can concern yourself with the town or city.

The thing I remember most about Lake Placid was a pile of snow not melted in July.
