Is there life east of Bangor?
I have driven hwy 9 once and it was at night. Is there anything at all on that 90 mile stretch? Kinda freaked me out a little! I understand I am moving to "rural" Maine and all but there has to be something else from Bangor to Calais. Does'nt there? What happens to those that have their car break down, are they ever heard from again? just wondering...

"No, he never returned, no-ooo, he never returned, and his fate is still unlearned (oo-bee-doo-bee-doo-bo). He may ride forever 'long the streets of Amherst; he's the man who never returned."
With apologies to the Kingston Trio.
You think it's bad now, you should have been here in the late 1960s.

The moose eat the people and the cars go to auction.
(Am I going to hell for this? Maybe? Ok. )
Someone will stop to help you if you break down. We don't like to see people stuck on the side of the road, especially in the winter. I think most of us have cell phones so we can call for help.

I knew it! I've heard of rogue moose who take people captive and enslave them to get food.

hmmm....might be those Midland and Sunbury trucks too!! grrrr.....they can be terrible!!
I have an area where I don't get cell service, but it's only about 15-20 miles on that entire stretch. One drive down that road and you will be reminded how many, many trees we have in Maine! But, MW is absolutely right--no one would just drive by you, ok, no one from about a 80 mile radius will just drive by you, without helping. (the 18 wheelers might, but I bet they'd at least call someone!)
That road has been improved by leaps and bounds since I've been around. It was so dangerous when I was growing up that my father wouldn't even drive it. We went along Rt 1 and through Cherryfield and the Black Woods It's much, much safer....but people travel it at high speeds and it's not one to drive when you're sleepy....
BTW, the people at the Airline Restaurant are a hoot, and the food is great

East of Bangor on Route 9?
Through Eddington, to Clifton, through Amherst and Aurora, Then Beddington and Devereaux, Wesley, Crawford, Alexander and Baring, Milltown, Calais.
A string of small communities.
Maybe it was because you drove at night, so you did not see the thriving metropolitan towns that you were driving through.
Do be careful when feeding them moose.

I guess I'm just a hermit or something, but I LOVE the idea of getting to the point where jobs and schools don't play a factor in where we live anymore. Can't wait to buy that little cabin in the woods and just disappear for weeks on end!! Nothing but the sounds of nature buzzing around me........the wind breathing in my ears.........the cracking of icy branches in a nearby tree........yep, that's the life!
So, how far northeast of Bangor do you have to go before civilization is a distant memory?

I think the people living in the towns Forest mentioned along RT 9 would say it's good!
