This reminds me.
I had to go through an initiation the first time that I crossed the Arctic Circle. It is called 'blue nose'. Among many other things it included sitting in a big tub filled with crushed ice while I was waiting my turn to go through the rest of the ceremony. Each of us going through the initiation had the option of wearing our under-wear or going nekkid. They had dumped some rock salt in the crushed ice to make it a tad cooler. We each went through the ceremony one at a time. When it finally became my turn, and I stood up, some of the ice was stuck to me, or rather frozen onto me. Quite a bit of ice was frozen onto me really. I do not know if I would have been warmer at that point if I had wore underwear. At the end of the ceremony, we each came out with our noses painted blue with prussian blue [a dye used in metal work], it took weeks for the blue to wear off. And it led to a long career which included many trips under the Arctic Circle. But on later trips I was never again being initiated, I had other duties.
On the other hand, I must say that neither my beard nor my head shrunk at all during that process.
