I wish you'd have sent some of your cold over this afternoon when it was 85° and I was picking strawberries. I live near Amity. It's not cold all the time.

I'm just saying you seem to think you know a great deal about Maine, but haven't experienced it first hand. I know where NH is, but it's not Maine, and until you live here year round, it's difficult to have an accurate picture of the climate. Saying it snows in July, or that we have 6 months of winter, just isn't accurate to me. I've lived here my entire life. There is a huge difference between the cold night that DeerIsle was talking about, and a snowstorm, along with the frequency of such events.

yes maine has some colder months, january and february in particular, but i remember taking my son twice to play golf in december (no snow and over 55 degrees)
and in the latter part of april we played.

northern maines' economy benefits by having much snow in the winter,,lots of snowmobilers all over new england travel up,,,to enjoy some of the best trail riding in new england.

ive travelled to aroostook county alot over the past 12 yrs,,,it seems the last few years have been mild(winters)

I was on various subs that were homeported in Scotland for a few years. Then ten years later I was stationed in Scotland for three years, owned a home and our children attended a Scot public school. We loved it.

One summer [1988] they had a terrible heatwave that lasted all week, in Glasgow a dozen people died from the heat, it had gotten up to 65 degrees.

At the time, I had gotten so accustomed to the temps, that I was in shorts and dripping sweat.

As far as my feelings about Maine go: so far in my limited exposure to this Southern climate, I have found it to be wonderful.

I think there should be a rule of nature that dictates we always have snow at Christmas. Warn Novembers and Decembers aren't any fun. During January and February of 2006 I rode around with the sunroof open many times because it was in the 50's.

I'm simply relaying all the info/stories that my husband gives me on his experience living there for 12 years. Northern Maine no less exactly what this thread is about. So perhaps your story is different than his but he's not lying

Is that like my folks telling me that when they were small children they had to walk bare-foot to school, in the snow, four miles both ways, and up-hill?

But he is embellishing it a bit. Yes it is cold, yes we do get snow (sometimes a lot), yes the winter nights are long and the days short, but we are FAR-FAR from drawing a comparison to any Arctic region. When people ask me how I like the winters in Northern Maine (170 miles North of Bangor, 300 miles North of Portland) they get a chuckle when I tell them they are warmer and have less snow than where I graduated from (Sault Sainte Marie, MI). Now that is truly a chilly place with the winds screaming off Lake Superior all winter. Compared to NH it may seem like all is a frozen wasteland, but it isn't really that bad (Don't tell though, it ruins the image you know. )
