Another subtle difference between northern Maine and southern Maine is the presence of a higher density of people of French heritage in the north, though this is also true in many of Maine's (former) manufacturing centers in southern, central and western Maine, where French-Canadians migrated to for jobs.

We just returned from camping in Northern Maine. We were in the Katahdin Region---and it was great! The nights were about 55, the days in the 70s-low 80s....we didn't freeze in our tents and sleeping bags, and didn't go to sleep in our winter coats either. Ok, I did wear socks on two nights, but I have a thyroid problem! The site we have was on Conservation Land, near a lake. A moose came to the lake every night and watched us make dinner and goof off. A local chipmunk was sorry to see us go only because we took all the Smart Food popcorn with us. Such a beautiful area of Maine.....too far from the ocean, but beautiful!
