Ah, yes, you have it right. I have heard it stated thusly:

"Growing older is inevitable, growing wiser is optional."

But then, if we did not retain at least some measure of immaturity, and the ability to see humor and laugh (especially at our own selves), we'd turn into a bunch of sourpusses who would be no fun to live with.
