When I was an apprentice pipefitter we had a wonderful journeyman mentor. Confronting a difficult or complex mechanical problem, the apprentices would get to fussing over what we would do. Our teacher, an old Jewish craftsman from the recently closed Brooklyn Navy Yard, would intervene and say "Don't worry, don't worry - it can only do one of two things.
