Though it's probably good for me, I'm tired of splitting wood with a splitting maul.
That's a great idea. I've been looking at wood splitters myself. Not that I need one right now living in an apartment this year but this time next year I expect to have processed many cords of wood.
Each year around tax rebate time I buy a piece or two of equipment. Last year was a lathe and band saw. This year I've thought about a wood splitter.
Any particular brand or model caught you eye. I've also thought about making one.

It's not going to stimulate the economy. I'll save mine for a rainy day.

I would use it to take a CNA course. I used to be a CNA years ago but unfortunately let my certificate expire. I work a full time job now but would like to do CNA work on the weekends for extra money. I got laid off from my job a little over a week ago. I had a feeling it was coming and had been sending out resume's just in case. I got laid off on a Friday, fortunately for me, interviewed for a new job on Monday, got hired Monday night and started work on Tuesday. (Someone was smiling down on me) If I could take the CNA course again and get my certificate back, I would always have that to fall back on. I think that would be a good investment for me.
