Michelin and Goodyear
Try Michelin or Goodyear, can't go wrong. Might want to take a road trip to Boston and check out Sullivan Tire they are a reputable tire company in the area and could help you out with what you need!
We got our tires at BJ's however..and no problems so far! its been a few yrs now.
BJ's wholesale club has tire discounts but you have to be a member (like Costco)
Here's a link to sullivan tire if you come down to Boston for a visit while you are here.

Here is a site that explains it far better than I would. Winter Tech - Metal Studs For Winter Tires
As a side note, the tires they are using for illustration in the article are the Winterforce tires.

Well, that explained a lot. When I get to Maine I am expecting you to put them on for me Bydand!

You will probably be fine with entry level snow tires.
The thing to keep in mind about snow tires is they make your all season tire last longer.
But if your tires are bald it will be a problem for you. You can have a Hummer, but if the tires are bald your in trouble.
I would put snow tires on the forrester and see how you feel about your truck later.
This winter has been cold and snowy. So be prepared to maybe get stuck.

Actually we decided to hold off and keep the all seasons that are on the car, and if necessary make a decision when we get to ME.
In the long run we will get spare rims for both vehicles and swap as need be... I know I will run studs... not sure about K.
We appreciate all the input!

Me, a Forester, and St. Louis storm
Well, the Forester and I have decided that we can still drive in the snow.
I was right in the middle of the 8" snowfall in St. Louis, MO the other night... me and the Forester and the semis were pretty much all that were rolling... and even a lot of the semis were pulled over in rest areas.
It did slow me down a bit (below 80 mph ) but we just kept on rolling...
Then we passed the plow and it was just the Subaru and me and the trackless highway before me... and we just kept on rolling. Not sure where the lanes were, but that was not an issue. The icing up of the wipers and not being able to find a good place to pull over and clean them, in the midnight darkness, finally told me it was time to find a rest area (none when you need one, of course) or gas station parking lot to cat nap in.
When I got up the next morning, there was a good 8" on the little car, the ground and no tracks anywhere but mine and the dogs. My less-than-new all season tires got me back on the highway and dealt just fine with the semi-plowed and frozen highway as well as the unplowed side streets.
Get stuck? I don't THINK so! LOL though I will not be one of the folks with the aura of invincibility on account of all wheel drive and all season radials...
with black ice it can happen to anyone. But I think 10 yrs in the WA canyon kinda helped a bit... and I still know how.
Come the end of Feb/beginning of March, I am not worried.
and to all who recommended the Forester, THANKS! I love that little car...

brand new all-seasons seem to work just fine :)
Last week my DW bought herself a Chevy Aveo. So far she loves it!
She drives into to work at around 6pm, and gets off work at around 2am. So more often than not she is driving home at colder temps with snow/ice.
At the end of this last week she re-filled it and reported that she got 36MPG.
It came equipped with: P185/60R-14, all-season, blackwall tires.
I drove it this morning into Bangor to drop off our son at work. A nice solid layer of ice with about an inch and a half of snow on top, until we got into Old Town where the roads had a bit of sand mixed in the slush.
That Aveo hugged the roads nicely, I was solidly hugging the roads at 45 to 50 MPH. Even with that added sand which seemed to make the slush stand up more.
Obviously it did slide nicely when I locked the tires, which I did a few times for fun. But it held a straight line.
I did observe other cars fish-tailing in it, but obviously I was not able to force the Aveo to fish-tail. One sedan on the freeway had nailed the guard-rail and spun-out, the front end of that car was gone. A state troopers was on scene. The wreck happened in a curve, and the wreckage had slid down off the pavement into the ditch, so both lanes of traffic were open.
Over-all I would say that these P185/60R-14, all-season, blackwalls are working just fine.

Thank you. If I ever get another car, that's what it will be. Good heater too. I won't be getting anything until the truck is paid off though.
