I guess there is something about standing straight for too long without shifting that can cramp an artery and reduce blood flow to the brain....thats what I heard.
I always heard it was something to do with too many shots at the bachelor party the night before. Maybe that's just my little brother and his crowd though.
Fort Williams would be beautiful, and not crowded at all that time of year.

This is where my husband and I eloped to in Kennebunkport.
Rooms & Rates – Maine Bed and Breakfast Inn Inns Maine Coast B&B Romantic Bed and Breakfast Getaway in Maine
We got married at the Inn. They gave us the name of a local Notary who worked with us on creating our vows and did the ceremony for us. The couple that own the inn were our witnesses. We were married 3 years ago. We married in October and it was gorgeous. There are several little restaurants and tons of little shops. If I were to do it all over again I would do it exactly the same way.

My husband and I eloped as well I don't live in Maine (Im a wannabe) but one thing to consider is whether you want a lot of passerbys (you're going to get that at a popular location like a beach). My husband and I got married at our city hall then we just took fun pics of each other, theyre more cherished than our pics from our 'after party'....they are just us being silly and our best pics
^that bed and breakfast looks lovely!

I made some assumptions when I read your OP.
I assumed that you wish to travel to a semi-exotic location [from the perspective of Brit] and bring with you a large wedding party. So your wedding will be a lot about socializing with friends and family in a pretty setting. While introducing your family to the idea of Maine as a wonderful place to live.
Obviously anyone can go to the city hall and get a quicky license, wham-bam-done.

Well it will be most likely the two of us and a couple of friends but it still needs to be in a very pretty setting though socialising will be limited ! We are eloping to get away from our families ( long story) but I still want it to be very special and memorable and New England being on our favourite places seems ideal.
No quicky license , but all the suggestions above sound absolutely wonderful.

I do understand the "semi-elopement". I got invited to an "elopement" along with the parents of the bride. The wedding couple didnt want to compete with a previously planned wedding in the family and steal any of the attention....so they eloped and had a private celebratory supper at Cliff House and later in the year had a reception in the pavilion over at the light house in Cape Elizabeth and invited guests.

I agree, the islands in the bay of Portland are wonderful and so quaint.
I also really LOVE Bar Harbor. I'm not sure what amenities are available there but Bar Harbor is a wonderful place.

There are countless beautiful places in Maine that would be perfect as a setting to your wedding. Give us a checklist of what it is you have in mind and we can try to match that picture up with places we've been. For instance, ocean, lakefront, brilliant foliage, white birches, pines, rocky coast, old ships, beaches, mountains, orchards, pumpkins, waterfalls, lighthouses, moose, deer, county fairs....there are literally a million parameters!

Give a good look at the Blair Hill, an old lumber baron's mansion overlooking Moosehead. Dan and Ruth are great hosts. Some prefer to marry on board the Katahdin.
