We had a friend on the School Board in Gay several years back. His family was relieved when he was not reelected after 3 terms- now they see him in the evenings for quality time!

Spring Hot and Cold
This is the time of year when the weather yaws from one extreme to the other. A couple of weeks ago down here it was in the 70's The past couple of days it was in the single digits in the morning.
We were talking about the "signs" of spring. What signs do Mainahs see from indoors to know what to expect when stepping outdoors?
From my house there are two things. First the state of ice (or not) on the birdbath. Colder than that, the rhododendron leaves. Below 32 deg the long oval leaves begin to curl lengthwise. Yesterday, the birdbath had that super hard white ice in it and the rhodo leaves were rolled up so tight, they looked like green pencils. I stepped outside to get the newspaper and my first breath was stunning - wow.
Also the usually busy squirrels were not to be seen - they must be staying in their dreys. Birds missing too, except for at the suet feeder.

This time of year you expect cold, and bundle up for it. If you step outside and it isn't real cold toss the jacket in the backseat because odds are, you'll need it before the day is over.
In the actual Spring I look for water dripping off the eves, or Water from snow melt already on the road. If it is still liquid, I know it is gong to be a warm day because it is "warm" already. First real "Spring" thing is the little flower bed right outside my Mothers door. It can still have a little snow covering it and her Daffodils will push right up through it and blossom. It looks so nice to see the brilliant yellow against the stark white background. It is generally the first "color" of the year.

Signs of spring are everywhere in the Sonoran desert- birds are singing, love is in the air and the foothills are covered with a nice green shag carpet. Normally they are brown and dusty but since we have had loads of rain this year, we are in for a wildflower treat!! Every 8 - 12 years, the desert is full of gorgeous lupines ( yes, like those in Maine but smaller in height) , bright red salvias and Mexican poppies.
I found a link with some photos:

Not much spring showing around here today unless you count rain as a sign.
We received about 10 inches of snow, 2inches of sleet and ice and now it's pouring rain! What a mess!! There's a big fat hawk sitting in one of my tall pines just looking so wet and dejected today. Poor guy.
