Alice, no safety course is mandated yet. I do think however that in order for a child to ride alone he/she must be 14 yrs old???? Not sure of that... but I think so. A safety course would be difficult to enforce as many people started riding as kids with their parents many years ago. The sport is very family friendly.
The International Trail System crosses into Canada in a few places. Also many out of staters come north for the weekend and bring a lot of money into northern Maines economy. Hotels, restaurants, gas stations and yes bars too, profit well during the sledding season.

An ITS trail borders one side of my property. I've considered putting in a rest area of sorts along it (on my property) for snowmobilers - picnic tables, lean to, covered shelter - that sort of thing if the weather gets rough or they have someone that just needs a break while they are riding. Not sure if that would help reduce fatalities or not. Worth a try.
