That is so great! If you hear someone hollering in the direction of Portland from 95 on March 2... look for a Penske truck with a trailer towing a very funky maroon toyota pickup... that'll be me! (that is, if you can hear me over the cat-yowl siren I expect to have clearing the way! LOL)

I'm glad you get to see the grands! I am due to take a trip out west to see mine as well.. the oldest (in WA state) just turned 16 yesterday and the youngest (in UT) is a couple months old...

I will keep an ear out for the catawalling coming from 95 and wish you Gods Speed on your journey.

Just get to see one of the grands. I have two 7 y o grand daughters both born in November...but one in SC and one in Saco! The southern contingent has Thanksgiving with Grampy on their calendar already--much more doable than California was!

Enjoy you visit out west with yours!

My heart aches at the thought of waiting another year, but we have to do this the right way for our family. In the meantime, I will continue doing my research of towns we're interested in calling home. We're also planning on visiting as soon as possible. I'm not the most patient person in the world, but as they say, good things come to those who wait (just trying to stay positive!).
Sounds very much like my wife and I, everytime we think we have it worked out something comes up. We have been working on our plan for the past 3 years, however the last thing that popped up was a beautiful little girl so no regrets there. PROUD DADDY! Well, this is our year! Still working out the fine details, like where are we going to live when we get there, pesky details lol.

Glad you're coming home Elston, but won't you miss the simple dress of Southern California? When I lived in San Diego I don't think I even owned pants. I still wear shorts and a t shirt from April through November.

Indeed! I am having a hard time finding a wardrobe to wear for the trip and am hoping that the jeans and long pants I ordered will get here in time.

Yes perpetual warmth does have its advantages.

When you lived in this area did you try to garden? I have a terrible time with adobe soil...I hate it. Water doesn't percolate into the ground, and when it rains it is so slick and sticks to your shoes and makes your feet weigh a ton. I didnt have any luck growing anything...except flowers around the house.

Funny story there, Elston. I lived in Mira Mesa and we were fortunate to have a nice size backyard. We negotiated a long term lease and the owner said treat the house like it was our own. Well my best friend (who is also from NH and was stationed in Oceanside in the Marines) helped me to plant herbs and spices around the flowers in the flower beds. Then that wasn't enough so the annuals went to make room for veggies. Soon that wasn't enough and after a wine run to Temecula the perennials and roses got ripped out and replaced with tomatoes and such. We had trucked in a lot of soil and supplements to add to the beds so everything grew terrific. One problem we did have was with snails. If you planted a pepper or tomato plant to small they would eat them down to nothing but a stub by the next morning. All in all though it was awesome to pick fresh cilantro, tomatoes, poblano and serrano peppers and whip up a batch of salsa.

I'm looking forward to trying to grow some of these same items in our Maine Garden.
