I've learned something new about Maine today. It is apparently very important to be able to pee in the woods. I hadn't known that before.

LOL Rest rooms can be far between I guess, I know where all the facilities are located along the route to "leaving the State" and we ARE going to stop at a good many of them! It's easier for men I'd say!

Free-peeing while surveying one's outdoor domain - beer in one hand, cigar in the other -definitely a guy thing...

Knox County is beautiful, but I've noted prices and taxes along the coast are pretty insane, right up there with Boulder! We plan to explore the inland areas more and get some ideas on land/housing availability.

We both agree that having a few acres and being able to have small animals and grow some food is important, as well as space for me to target shoot, ride motorcycles, and pee in the woods without offending somebody else's sensibilities...somehow I don't think this behavior would be 'acceptable' in a place like Camden..

Biggest issue is deep roots here in Colorado...it's going to be pretty tough making that big decision to leave...or maybe not...
A real Mainer can make potato trenches with the dirtbike while shooting at a game animal for dinner and pee all at the same time!

I think that should be Maine's new motto!

Especially now that the black flies are out. I'm not dropping trough outside no matter how bad I have to go.

Oh that explains it. I just need to take up cigars.

(Obviously I've had too much sun today. I'll just go cook supper now and mind my manners.)

Gotta say I never realized that peeing in the woods was a difficult proposition.
Now, the yard might be a different issue...

On a totally different note, the first part of my shipment from Overstock that I got from my City-Data gift certificate arrived today! Quite a surprise.. the last notice I got indicated it hadn't even shipped yet and it's the first to get here (bits of wool roving, to spin).

I have an interesting problem, though, as Overstock insisted on having a STREET address for UPS and then one of the items is coming by postal media mail and we don't GET mail here. I don't even know that there is a mail box! So I will go down to the PO in Milo tomorrow and see what we can arrange. Being a small town, I am sure there will be something (unlike the Bangor PO which seems to be full of constipated bureaucrats -- if I can say that here -- LOL)

On another happy note, I am on my way to being (legally, at least) an official Mainer. I made my drivers license today. After hearing horror stories galore (a friend who has to do his in July asked me to take a number for him today!) I was out of there in under 40 minutes, even after making them do it over three times to get the address thing right (physical on the license, mailed to the po box... with luck. "Ernest" set up a temporary address -- the PO box -- and said that it "doesn't always work" and if I don't get my license in 3 weeks I need to call them.

Pee Free or Die! I love it! Another reason I can't wait to move to Maine: The freedom to pee in my yard. Try doing that in our HOA subdivision here in NC.

All this talk of the 'black flies' is scaring me...are they really that bad? Do they attack peeing men with cigars?

We have biting flies here too, but they're seasonal and usually at their peak in June and gone by August.

I'm not keen on rubbing chemicals into my skin, either. As I'm outdoors a lot, I am wondering if the flies are worse in certain areas than in others...i.e. coastal vs. inland, closer to water, etc.

With out trying to scare you...yes blackflies CAN be terrible. A group of my friends went to Baxter State Park in May one year . Even though they had tents they were not bug proof and they did not take any bug repellant with them. All four of them ended up in the hospital in Millinockett for cortisone shots to lower the swelling in their faces and legs. All due to black fly bites. I have worked in the Medway area in late May and early June when the black flies were so bad you could not work in the woods for more than ten or fifteen minutes at a time even with a hat and headnet. They can be VERY bad. They can and do ruin a lot of outdoor activities in Maine.
