Where is your land in Alaska? Would anybody working on the North Slope find it practical to build there? I know they tend to work for a time up on the field and have an equal time off the field. The demand for oil will come back and our country will have to drill in Alaska. Don't lose heart. If you have owned your land for more than 5 years you should be OK. If you bought at the peak about 2 years ago you might have trouble unloading it at a profit.

Megan,

Have you put your land up for sale yet? You can what if, what might, etc., wringing your hands and fretting all day.

The only way things in your situation will change is if you start to actually take some steps that make that change begin to happen. Never mind what the tv says or the computer says. Go inquire in your area about what's happening, who's looking, etc., and get a gauge on your specific area. Don't give up before you've even tried sweetie.

In other words: DON'T QUIT!!!!!

If you want your dream to happen, it will happen, but you have to participate.

Thanks guys. We do have our land listed with a realtor. It won't get looked at much in the winter, because it isn't road accessible in the winter. Realistically, not many people will be looking until the snow melts in May. I do have hope, it just tends to wane in the winter when the sun doesn't come up until after 1pm and go down again before 4pm, so when I am at work, I never get to see it. Unfortunately, we did buy the land 2 years ago, but aren't trying to make a profit, just break even. We'll see. It's a beautiful spot. The land is in Talkeetna, about 2 hours North of Anchorage. We don't live anywhere near it right now, so we only go to check on it if we happen to fly to Anchorage and have extra time. Anyway, the hard part will be deciding to leave Alaska before the land sells. But I know, risks are worth taking if they get you to your dream. <sigh>. I just have the winter blues. But thanks for the encouragement. I DO worry way too much about uncontrollable events.

I am not good giving an advise, let me try it anyway.

If you not already paid off your land, Don't do it save your nest egg,
since you are not sure you want to be there.

Don't build because if all fails, unless you think it is easier selling a house than land and you plan to be there for a while longer.

JoanEM is on a distinguished road
Hi, This is JoanEM. OK. I have no idea how to start a new thread. I've been clicking here and there, and I'm still clueless! No surprises there!!!

I absolutely MUST be out of my current home by 10/24/12. My ex-husband will have me thrown out if I don't move by then. I absolutely LOVE Maine! My parents took me to Gouldsboro(?) when I was 4 or 5 years old. I still remember the cottage on Jones Pond and I still remember a white and blue sea plane taking off every morning from that pond. I remember yelling and hearing my echo. I remember the wild blueberries growing just outside the door. I have so many memories of Maine that are quite special to me.

I have no idea how to start a new thread. I would like more information about Maine and I am trying to narrow down my search for my Eden!!

Thanks for your assistance!

Hi Joan,

Where are you on the Cape? I"m here in Brewster (West).

So, you have 3 years to get out of the house? That's generous!! You've come to the right place for info on your ideas re Maine.

Welcome and good luck with your search!

Gale

DH is at the annual winter sales meeting in Toronto right now. We know there isn't an opening in Maine at this time, but he is going to put a bug in HR's ear and hope that something will come available in the next 4-6 months. If that doesn't happen, I'm not sure what we'll do. With this economy, we really need to have a job in place before we move and that is almost impossible to accomplish from 1380 miles away.

UPDATE: He just called. As coincidence would have it, he was seated next to the rep from Maine at dinner. She has been with the company for a year and has yet to meet her quotas. Said that owners/buyers are terrified of spending money, even in the heavy tourist towns. However, unless she gets fired, she has no plans to leave the company as she likes the job. Bummer.
