I also talked to the local oil company that already services the house. They said "today's price" on oil is 2.39/gal and propane is 1.95/gal. This may be beneficial info for others moving into the area.

Goody! I was going to dig around on the 'net for them until I realized that which utility companies we would use would depend on where we live. We were thinking Calais, until we get used to snow again and find out which areas we like best. I guess we'll find out next week. Or at least get a better idea. I'll send email and phone #'s by DM. Thanks!

Checkin' In
Well, I have not posted in awhile, although I have been silently lurking. My husband and I finally made a date for leaving- June 1st. We put two pieces of candy in a jar for every day we have left, and we both eat a piece every day so that we can watch the level go down. Silly, I know, but it helps. The problem, of course, is that we have no idea where to go or what to do. We know we can't stay here any longer for financial and mental health reasons, but the economy is horrible and jobs are even worse. Even nursing jobs are feeling the hit. All we know is that we want a house in some land in a rural area and we want to 'settle down'. It should feel exciting but instead it feels troubling because of the job situation. I am beginning the paperwork with some nursing companies but they are not super optimistic about the job situation. Sometimes I feel like we are stupid for leaving, but I just can't bear the idea of staying. So we are planning to pack up, fly out what we are planning to keep, put it all on a trailer in Anchorage, and go for a drive. Will we end up in Maine? I am not sure. We had also looked at Minnesota, but the job situation there is even worse. For now, we will head wherever I can find work, with the hopes of eventually making it to Maine. When I was younger, it didn't feel so scary to just pack up and go. But now we have something to lose..... our dream. Sometimes I think it was easier before we had a dream of having our own home on a little chunk 'o' land. We have also changed gears somewhat in our thought of buying land and building a house. With the market the way it is, we are entertaining the idea of buying a house on 10-20 acres. Anyway, I am rambling on a bit, but thanks for listening. Just feeling frustrated and unsure of how to proceed in unstable times. We know we are going to leave anyway, and we have to have a pretty large amount of faith that things will work out. Anyway, that's our most recent update- feeling apprehensive and uncertain in Nome, but forging ahead with our plans regardless. ..........

Hi Megan,
I can't believe I'm even saying this, but have you considered looking at Wisconsin? We have a huge and highly respected medical community in the State and, from just one link, there seem to be plenty of nursing jobs available. Check it out:
Healthcare: Nursing Jobs in Appleton, WI
WI is definitely NOT Maine, but it would get you out of Alaska and halfway to Maine. You could probably make it the rest of the way after a couple of years to regroup and allow the economy to recover a bit.
