Chosen...... by Something.

When we actually bought our house in Bar Harbor, we had trouble getting a realtor to take us seriously. Apparently we are the second longest distance people who have ever bought through thE FIRST REALTOR who actually took us seriously. And we had to explain things to him and tell him that we actually had the 20% down needed to get a mortgage. And the realtor has been in business in MDI and Hancock County for more than 25 years.

He said that the number of people who look at properties posted on his sign outfront is legion, and the number of people who follow up with him is large, but the number who actually come back after the vacation to look is small, and the number who buy after that is very very small.

He had a phrase: MANY ARE CALLED, MOST ARE FROZEN.

Contrary to the xenophobia sometimes seen on this forum, I have found the people of MDI and Hancock County to be very accepting of outsiders who want to move there.

I should preface this by saying that a) I make it clear we are not going to become "summer people", b) that we are not taking any jobs away but are bringing in money through a pension, SS, and some investments, and c) that we are not rich people from the south, in that everything we own is tied into the house we are buying on-island.

My experience is that saying and proving that you want to be part of the little winter on-island community has a great impact on the people there. They have welcomed us more than the current rural PA community ever did.

Flatlander has to do with the terrain leaving Maine. When your in Maine the land is not very flat when you get to the southern boarder it flattens out hence the term for all those coming from that direction.

Lived in Maine for 20 some odd years. Been called a Mainiac, Mainer, and if you're from Downeast Maine, a "Mainuh".

That could be taken as insulting.

A bunch of wonderful people who might include a few drunks, would be less insulting and possibly more accurate.

I think you are looking at this the wrong way. Real Mainers, don't call themselves anything. We are. We call those who AREN'T things, many of which have been discussed here.
