The full moon is very bright and clear. The sky is mostly open with clouds occasionally speeding by. We have a break in the on and off snow that is going on. Heavier snow is forecast for tonight.

Good sky

The moon is so bright it seems like there is a light on in the back yard. It is in the east, high in the sky, slightly southward. It is throwing shadows. Magnificent in binoculars. One can get a feeling for the Apollo astronauts - what they encountered when they landed on this small planet. (I am old enough to remember the thrill)

I had the idea to take my digital camera outside and try to take a picture. It is _very_ damp/cold. Clearly I cannot get a hand held shot of the bright moon. But if the forum attachment thingy works for me, you all will get an idea how bright the moon and how clear the sky. Here goes...

Two thirds of the moon is in shadow (from lower left to upper right) but still visible. No colors yet. This is very cool

Remember - not another one until 2010.

I wish I could get a photo but maybe this will encourage me to check out the local astronomy groups...

And I wish I wasn't so cold outside

Same report here in Jacksonville. Darn clouds, and that warm wind from the south. Rain will be here in 24 hours...

Moon 4/5's in shadow now - lower left to upper right. No colors yet. There is a bright "star" just above it that I believe may be a planet. And there is a reddish one just to the lower left.

Now the moon has a sliver of small bright "frosting" on the upper left. And it is dark outside - not like the bright it was awhile ago. No colors yet.

We have very bad skys here in Arlington - a bright, light polluted pink hase. But this moon show is great.

The moon has a big shadow on it, like when somebody goes in front of a movie projector and everybody boos

That was the sandwich of Saturn and another star, they mentioned that in the news today. They said with binoculars (high power) you might just get a glimpse of the rings. I am giving it one last try, and then good night. 5am is early.

Last edited by maine4.us; 02-20-2008 at 08:11 PM.. Reason: wribg planet, no rings around saturn duh!
