Default Closest airport to Eastport

What is the closest airport to Eastport? Is it Bangor?

Me and my family are going to Eastport on vacation this summer (hoping to move there the following summer) and we're coming from Reading, PA which is a 12 hour drive....

We are thinking of flying, however, it looks to us like Bangor is the closest airport and that's still 3+ hours away from Eastport...

Isn't there anything closer? Maybe on the Canadian side?

Thanks, everyone...

....Sue

Bangor is the closest major airport offering commercial flights. Fredericton, NB might be a little closer, but fares would be much higher and I can't even imagine the hoops one would jump through to take a rental car out of the Country. (you would be renting in Canada and looking to travel in the US). Machias has an airport, but no commercial service. You might find a flight into Trenton airport which is near Bar Harbor, but again, winding your way to Eastport would be about the same distance as from Bangor (maybe a few miles shorter), but air fares would be much higher.

Bangor and Bar Harbor are the closest for commercial flights, Eastport has its own airport for private flights.

We will be driving from Charleston, WV in May and it will take around 19 hours to the house in Eastport. I wish I only had a 12 hour drive, I could leave early in the morning and be there by dinnertime.

Woo-hoo! Another future Eastporter! Eastport will be quite the lively place when all we forum members finally make it up there. (Not that it isn't already a super-cool town)

Bangor is the closest commercial airport worth considering. Trenton would be expensive and less convenient in terms of available flights. Eastport is considered the back of beyond for a reason, y'know! If it were easy to get to, we''d all live there.

Yay! Can't wait!! When are you moving to Eastport?

We would move now except that our 17-year-old son is in 11th grade and we wanted to wait till he graduates next year instead of starting a new school in a new state for his senior year....

Hope the housing is still affordable by the summer of 2009, tho! Right now, the houses in Eastport seem pretty reasonable....

P.S. All us future Eastporters should meet sometime when we're all up there and have a party -- er, pahty!!!

Thanks, everyone, for the info on the flights.....we'll probably just end up driving the 12 hours up (6 hours one day and 6 the next since we're probably too much of a weeny to do it straight thru) and flying sounds like too much of a hassle plus too much $$$...

P.S.S. We're comin' up for vacay this July 12-19 to scope out the area in order to move the following summer....will there be a lot for our 17-year-old son to do there do ya think? Otherwise he'll be bugging us endlessly that he's bored and wants to go home....

Thanks everyone!

...Sue

I don't know that a 17 year old son will have a ton to do in Eastport. When I was there a lot of the teens hung out near the Coast Guard station. The teens were friendly and I think they liked seeing new faces. He might be the center of attention for those evenings.

The drive between Bangor and Eastport is beautiful. Highway 9 is in good shape, and I made it from Bangor to Eastport in a little over 2 hours. Of course, they call it the airline highway, so I pretended I was a plane! Touched the high places and flew over the low ones my DW, MenME told me.

St. John, NB is closer to Eastport than Bangor. It never hurts to look at fares and do the comparisons.....BUT, in the summer you would have to think about crossing back into the US, and that's not going to be pleasant this summer unfortunately. Our new bridge will not be ready, we have new requirements, and traffic is awful. Sometimes the wait is as long as an hour

If I could make the drive in 12 hours, I would elect to do that instead of flying. You wouldn't have to get a rental car, plus you are probably looking at a 9 hour day if flying - get to the airport 2 hours, 2 hour flight to "somewhere", 2 hour layover, 2 hour flight to Bangor, 1 hour to get your luggage AND rental car. Nah, no brainer - drive! Good luck!
