Slyfox2, where do you get your information or in this case Mis-information? There is no inheritance or estate tax in Florida. Look it up. On another note, there is also no state income tax.

I would choose Maine hands-down. Though you will be hard pressed to find much in the way of housing under $150K unless you settle in a very rural area. Keep in mind that the further you go away from the coast, the less expensive housing you will find. Travel west of Portland out to Windham and you will find a mix of country and quite built-up areas with plenty of conveniences. West of Windham is Standish which is nice, but you will be driving 5-10 miles to get to anything.

Maine real estate taxes are low (except for coastal cities and towns), but state income taxes are high. It's a wash.

I live in Florida and we are thinking of moving to Maine. Florida does not have a diverse landscape. It's flat, marshy, and swampy. Most of the year the heat is smothering. There are so many people here. I live in central Florida and it's just urban sprawl upon urban sprawl.

On the upside there is always something to do. There are a lot of festivals, museums, amusement parks, concerts, etc so in that department we aren't lacking. I'm sure there are quaint and homey towns here, but those usually come with very conservative ideals.

You probably should stay in Mass. if you really believe what you posted. For me, I don't see all these problems and if I know of any, they are most likely repeated in almost every state across the nation.

Having lived my entire life in FL, and only having escaped to MT 3 years ago, you would be crazy to live in FL. I grew up in one of those small towns people have mentioned, and that town is dying a slow death. The real estate prices have crashed. Due to environmental regulations the independent family agriculture that used to employ the town is now owned by large corporate farms, who pay very low wages and offer no chance of promotion. All of my family still lives there, surviving day by day, as the large metropolitan areas continue to creep further, eating up what is left of the countryside. The small towns are now just welfare meccas, and retired people. We lived in a small town call Green Cove Springs, 30 miles south of Jacksonville, FL, along the Saint Johns river. There used to be woods during most of the drive into downtown where I worked. Now it is endless housing developments, with massive houses crammed onto tiny yards. None of the neighbors on our street was from FL. IIf you work in the medical or construction/trades, you have endless employment opportunities. However; the pay is much less than other parts of the country. Due to the fact that there isn't any state income tax, you will pay very high property taxes, high sales taxes, including on home purchases and vehicles. The schools in the small towns are horrendous, and the schools in the large cities are severely overcrowded. Consider this, there are high schools in FL with a larger population than entire towns in MT. I went to a high school with 1,000 students, my sister in law went to a high school with 4,000 students.

There is endless road construction to feed the ever expanding population. FL also doesn't really have a true culture. Southeast FL is like living in a foreign country. Most of the population is from South America, and the Caribbean. Whites are actually a minority in Southeast FL. There is a huge drug/organized crime/gang problem. This covers Dade County, Broward County, and Palm Beach County. SouthWest FL used to be an old white person retirement mecca, but that has changed. Fort Myers, Punta Gorda, Sarasota. The area in between the two is where I grew up. It used to be all small family focused farming communities, but once the family farms all got bought out, the money no longer stayed in community. The small towns of Clewiston, Moore Haven, Okeechobee, Belle Glade, Pahokee, LaBelle, are all dying.

The Tampa area is severely overgrown, and is now eating the small communities north and south of it. Pretty soon Tampa and Orlando will just be one massive megacity. Orlando is just a massive urban sprawl with lakes dotting it. Daytona has gotten huge, it used to be just a small beach town. North Florida, with the exception of Pensacola, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, and Gainesville, still has some small towns, but there is no economic activity in those areas.

So in Florida, you have the choice of massive sprawl and high real estate prices in the cities, or cheaper homes and no economic activity in the small towns that are left. This doesn't even cover the massive mosquito problem, snakes everywhere, cockroaches the size of hummingbirds, the severely polluted water, massive ground water problems, etc.

We had to get our children out of that hole.
