Got the license to day. It looks exactly like my old one.

Good for you. It will be 90 days after the legislative session ends before most laws go into effect. It gives us time to get stuff done. That way we can pick between the old law and the new law. You need to pay attention to do that because there are lays some surprises in there.

I guess my license won't work for flying come 2018. I'll need to upgrade my passport anyhow, since I'd like to take some friends up to Campobello in September.

West Virginia allows people to choose between a state ID driver's license and a federal ID type. Since we see no need for flying any more, and carry passports, the state ID type are adequate, cheaper, and quicker (for us).

We may use our passports to go the Campobello this summer too.

You can get in with your driver's license. The Canadians don't care. But the US customs will not let you come back.

Unless your state has an enhanced driver's license program.

These are the requirements for crossing into Canada by land, if you are a US citizen or permanent resident.

"If you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, you must carry proof of citizenship such as a passport, birth certificate, a certificate of citizenship or naturalization, a U.S. Permanent Resident Card, or a Certificate of Indian Status along with photo identification. If you are a U.S. permanent resident, ensure you carry proof of your status such as a U.S. Permanent Resident Card."

That is incorrect. You might get into Canada by land with an non-compliant Real-ID driver's license. That will depend on what kind of a day the CBSA officer is having. I've seen them turn people around and I've also seen them let them in. If you do get into Canada without a compliant ID or passport, you will not and can not be denied entry back into the US if you are a US Citizen. You might spend some time in Secondary until the officer determines your identity and status, but a USC must be allowed entry. To enter by water or air, you must have a passport.

I HAVE KNOWN PEOPLE for whom this has not happened. That's why I posted it. However I admit its before all this enhanced driver license stuff, and happened before 2015 or so.
