Maineah,
What IS the average cost/KWH for electricity in Maine? I pay between 13 & 14 cents/KWH down here. Thank you, Governor Good Hair & deregulation...

Our supplier just went up and the delivery charge just dropped a bit. Over 18 cents/KH.

After electric deregulation, Central Maine Power and Bangor Hydro could no longer manufacture their own power. For instance, the dams up here at Wyman and Harrison are owned by Florida Power and Light. There was no competition beating down the door to supply power to the state as promised. Electricity is a huge factor in running any type of business up here. I think we are at the top in the nation!

When they de-regulated Ma Bell, "they" said it would be cheaper. At the time I think that basic phone service was about $5 a month.
When "they" pushed to de-regulate electricity, "they" said it would be cheaper. I don't see it there either.
One one hand I think that utilities should remain regulated, I mean, you can't *really* choose another power provider, they don't hook a different wire to your house, whoever owns the wire is gonna get his due regardless of any alleged competition.
On the other hand...if Ma Bell *hadn't* been deregulated, would we ever have got DSL and Fiber-optic internet hook-ups?

Left Texas and never looked back!
Welcome!
I escaped Austin, Tx over a year ago and live on the coast of Maine now (WHY did I not do this sooner?!!!!). You are heading in the right direction. I still teach, and love every day off so much more here-it is spectacular in its beauty. We live several hours from Portland-but still make pilgrimages to the whole foods there every two months or so (can't give it up). Good luck to you and WELCOME!!!!

I will have to check out the Whole Foods, I have never shopped there although my son in South Carolina loves it but only goes there to totally and hedonistically indulge! Where in Portland is it? (There is one out here in San Diego, but I have never gone in. What are your "must haves" that bring you back?

Their produce is awe-inspiring, the wine selection divine, and don't get me started on the olive oil and balsamic vinegars offered. I love to cook, and the markets up here on the sunrise coast are, shall we say, limited. I miss the whole foods, central markets (TEXAS) and trader joes of the world more than ANY thing else in moving. I am a homebody on the weekends, snow falls and I want to craft a wonderful exotic meal-but if I have not thought ahead it is going to be mundane! The selection up here (a stone's throw from Canada) is limited-so I live for the trips to whole foods for the *real essentials* that make life so fine.

Hi guys,
Whole foods was on Marginal Way in Portland, it's the former Wild Oats.
Tis' a little expensive but everything is very fresh, the meat in the case appears to be a little more reddish in color than what we would normally see at Hannafords or Shaws. Might be the lighting used...
The seafood also looks nice, however I would recommend supporting your local fish mrkt instead. Remember the fish you eat today, slept last night in Casco Bay!
Just my opinion...
