I have no doubt that the dog will sleep on the bed when we aren’t looking and try to get up on the bed once he’s no longer in his crate for the night.

Our other Labs all did that(as well as the smaller ones). But as an 8 week old puppy we have the power to train him not to sleep on the bed. We pick him up from Wassookeag Retrievers in Dixmont on Tuesday Morning. A new chapter in our lives. I can’t wait to have to “GO POTTY” at 3 AM when the temp outside is -7, and the wind chill is -22. NOT!

My girlfriend in high school had a Border Collie. Very intelligent and she was an amazing Frisbee dog! Unfortunately, the dog was the smarter of the two.

Mom would never let our dogs sleep in our beds. That lasted until she went to sleep.

You guys are all making me want a dog (or two)! Alas, I'm not sure my kitties would go along.

Also not sure how our recent/current New Hampshire temps compare to Maine temps, but to give you an idea, right now where I live (just outside of Keene) it's 3:10 a.m. and the outside temp is NEGATIVE 6 (we have an expected low of negative 10 for tonight).

This is my bed warmer, Gretel, who basically lives in the master "suite" (she prefers to think of herself as an "only kitty," and I maintain that illusion for her as much as possible) ...

She's a sweetie but not very big so not too much warmth! Good thing I like a cold bedroom for sleeping (as in, 55 degrees or so) ... when my SO is here he doesn't much like that.

STAY WARM, everyone, and I wish you all a wonderful 2018!

Cats are way more easy to deal with. Getting a puppy is like having a baby for awhile. You have to house train him/her, and then you have to conscientiously train them in other areas, otherwise you have an unruly out of control dog.

Bringing in a pup at the end of an old dog's life affords you the opportunity of having old faithful train the youngster. My Labradoodle showed the chihuahua/papillon the ropes, so to speak. Took him round the house, fed him from his food dish, pointed out the waterbowl. And, best of all, showed him early on the benefits of "going" outside. The little guy never had an accident in the house. And, to keep this on topic, yes a chihuahua can survive a Maine winter.

The doodle crossed over the rainbow bridge a year ago. The chihuahua was bereft so we got him a kitten. what were we thinking?

How old was the old dog? We thought of that, but by the time we did, our old dog could barely walk.

Do you take your chihuahua out to potty in -7F temps?
