What can you tell me about the Sanford area? (schools, to live in)

We're thinking of relocating to the Sanford area from upstate NY. I'm from Boston originally and want to be a reasonable distance from my family but still want to live in the country. Can't afford to go back to Mass. We're in our 50s so schools are not an issue. Any input is appreciated.
