Dead line gets postpoined

"But the way this turned out is so odd it's worth repeating. States including New Hampshire, Maine, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Washington, and Montana have enacted laws saying "hell no we'll never comply with Real ID." And Homeland Security officials carefully ignored those public votes of condemnation, instead pretending that those states really intend to acquiesce by the next major deadline of December 31, 2009. (See our special report on Real ID from earlier this year.)"

I was a little concerned about this part

"In response, Gov. John Baldacci, a Democrat, wrote back to Baker saying in part:

I will seek legislation to halt Maine's current practice of issuing licenses to those not present lawfully in the United States.

I will submit legislation, which includes a funding source and appropriations, that will adopt three changes in Maine's licensing processes:

Maine will enter into an agreement with USCIS and utilize the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements Program to verify DHS documents presented by non-citizens.

Maine will begin capturing and maintaining photographs of each individual applying for a license or state identification card, even if no license is issued."

I say GOOD. WHy should illegal aliens have a valid maine license? I say arrest them when they apply and send them back. The are breaking the law. We are supporting them on our dime.

Photograph them whether they get license or not - good. Keep a record and match to future applications to verify they aren't trying to get a second ID. Wasn't there a case not long ago about a woman with 3 or 4 ID's getting money off the welfare to the tune of $100K?

WI takes the photo, runs a security check with HLS and then mails you your license. I was surprised since I was accustomed to just waiting a few minutes for my license in Maine and being able to take it with me the same day.

"Why should illegal aliens have a valid Maine license? I say arrest them when they apply and send them back" ( shadowfax1997)

I agree, But I disagree that the "Real ID act" is the way to do this. Why should I risk my personal security and privacy when there should be other ways to identify Illegal aliens.

This sounds to me more of a problem with the welfare system then with the ID system. lets fix the source instead of trying to cover up the problem with a band aid

Not anymore, the last couple have been mailed to both the DW and myself. Something to do with the new licenses (Ok they have been around for 6 or 7 years now, but you know...)

Yeah, this isn't about tracking illegal aliens or "terrorists". This is about getting *everyone* in the system... They try to pass it off as being for the greater good to track things like aliens and "terrorists"... just like they tried to justify the Iraqi war by saying that they had dealings with Al Qaeda (when there was no evidence at the time and continues to be none). Also no evidence that Al Qaeda had anything to do with 9/11, but that's another conversation...

Ah, okay then. Something to remember when we get back. My license was just about to expire when we moved so it had been a while. Thanks for the info

Okay, I am a bit confused. Can someone explain in simple language what the ID thing is about? I know you will need it to fly and stuff, but what exactly has to be on it. What causes the invaion of privacy? I just don't know enough and if anyone thinks they could explain it to be....please do.

They will not let you on a plane without a passport, or picture ID and birth certificate. Did I understand this right?
