I have a small red squirrel who hangs around my yard. Very cute!

It must be mating season as I just watched a downy woodpecker trying to mate with another downy. He chased her all over the yard from tree to tree and at one point they even were attached and fell to the ground together (in my horror) but they both seemed fine and flew back up into the tree again to continue the ritual. They finally flew off.

Two male pileated woodpeckers were having a territory war this morning. They each had hollow, dead trees to bang on. They'd been at it over an hour when I came inside.

According to popular belief, you original colonists wiped out the dodo bird because you were too incompetent, back then, to hit them with a shot from a blunderbuss. As history puts it; you had better luck feeding yourselves by clubbing dodo birds with the butt of the gun instead of actually shooting them. They were such a popular food source they were eventually hunted into extinction.

Nothing is further from the truth.

The dodo bird survives to this day and your birds are specimens of a once thriving population.

i had 8 pair of geese and 4 pairs of ducks in front of the house today,,,the ducks and geese seem to get along well,,tho, if one pair of geese got too close to another, they'd get to fighting.

The geese and ducks are back on the river. The ice went out on March 31st.
Our next visitors will be the loons. They hang out on the Androscoggin River until the ice leaves the pond and then move up to start another season....sigh...life is good.

When I left back in January the Penobskot river was all ice. It is a very pristine view.

Nah, if you have the right kind of pecker, you don't have to bribe them.
