Default A Timeline Of Maine Arts & Culture

I was doing some research on Maine and geneology and found this website from the Maine Public Broadcasting Network with a timeline of Maine from the 1500's to present day. I couldn't help but laugh at the first impressions of those living in our 'hood' many centuries ago. It almost sounds like people from away describing Mainers in the 21st century. Except for maybe a couple parts.

"1524....Fresh from a successful voyage of discovery that took him from the Carolinas to Rhode Island, the Italian navigator Giovanni da Verrazzano (c. 1485-1528) fetched up on the coast of what became Maine, probably eastern Casco Bay. He was not terribly successful in trading with the inhabitants who kept their distance, laughed, bared their bottoms and fired off a volley of arrows. Verrazzano left the first written record of the place, calling it "The Land of Bad People" in his report to the King of France and on his brother's map of the coast."

Like I said, I can't remember hearing of Mainers mooning anybody but in the 21st century, bad means good right?

Bucksport used to have a canoe club and they had outings on Tuesday and Friday evenings all summer and into the fall. Every year they would make a trip to Blue Hill Bay. Windjammer cruise ships on tourist cruises out of Camden would anchor for the night in Blue Hill Bay and the tourists would be astounded to see a bunch of canoes coming out to greet them. We just said that Mainers in canoes had been doing that for 500 years.

I'm all for the bare bottoms (and streaking in the woods at Forest's house) but ARROWS and BARE BOTTOMS in the same sentence is a little scary!
