I grew up in New England, spent 30 years living in New Hampshire, got flooded out of New Hampshire, moved to Maine June 2007. Been here since then.

Maine is wonderful!!!

People complain about taxes and excess government, but I won't complain if the government keeps Maine rural as it is now. No more immigrants from the lower 49 states.

before you get too hard on some of these guys- downeast maine is a hard place to be if you are from away. i'm from the western part of the state, 30 some odd years ago the town i grew up in was the same way, but as more and more people from away moved in, it became a more favorable place for outsiders.
when i first moved downeast, i was up to the base one time and the woman that ran the rec center called me in to her office. she asked me where i was from and if it was like 'this' everywhere in maine or just here. i asked what she meant by this, and she said 'ya know, the being from away thing.'

a few years later i was visiting an older gentleman in the hospital whose family has lived here for many generations and he asked me how i liked the town. i told him i like it, its beautiful, hard to get to know people, hard to be away from people i know. he told me 'we like you, we do, but be patient with us. for as long as time, people from away move here because they love it. they are either summer people in fancy houses who dont want anything to do with the locals except buy a lobster now and then, or people who move their family here thinking its such a great place, but then they just cant take it- the fog in the summer, the isolation, being so far away from stores and such.... and they move away after a year or two. he then said- i've watched my family and friends get their heart broken so many times because they became close with people who loved it here, only to find out they loved the idea of here, so we have a tendency to be a bit skiddish when it comes to newcomers, we just want to make sure you are going to be around a while.

willb will become famous soon enoughwillb will become famous soon enoughwillb will become famous soon enough
We came up here 6 years ago, Feb 14, 2003 (The coldest Valentine's day ever in Eastport). We found the house of our dreams, 5 beds; one for each kid, 2 baths; one for our daughter and 1 for the rest of us, all for 59K. It's a block and a half from Shackford Cove and there is a beautiful 6 acre field in the back where the deer hang out in the evening and an occasional eagle soars, looking for a stray cat. We have had a moose lumber by our porch, and the foxes and raccoons are always coming by looking to see what's in the garbage or if the cats want to go play. This is a few blocks from downtown, a nice walk to the schools, or the IGA.
The neighbor a few hundred feet from our back door has a tattoo parlor in their house and an Auto body shop in this incredible self-built shed next to the house. There is a huge pile of garbage and old tires behind the shed like there wouldn't be in NC because of the snakes down there. Our neighbor has this big old truck that he starts up and runs at 10 til seven each weekday. It's loud and in the summer it keeps us from wasting the day laying around in bed. A good friend of ours has a few thousand Blue spruce trees on his land and he offered to help me dig up a few this spring and plant them close to the property line as a bit of a buffer, which might be a good idea. I would always chat with their daughter when she worked at the IGA, but I don't think we've said more than 10 words to the parents, mostly just a wave and "Hi" when we're both in our backyards. Of late I notice that someone has been coming by after it snows and widening our parking place so that it's easier to get in and out from any angle. I finally caught the culprits last week, our neighbors; I waved and said "thank you" and they laughed and said "no problem". I think neighbors are usually a lot better if you keep your mouth shut.

Let's see--grew up in the north Georgia mountains, lived all over, spent a week in Maine and looking forward to moving there in a month. I had always heard Mainers were straight forward--okay, blunt-- hard working, and with a low tolerance for people who are dishonest and lazy. All true, from what I saw. Also found them to be high on moral values and respect for other people and ready to help a perfect stranger. I think we're gonna like it there.

Born in Jackson, raised in Knox, moved to Monroe when I was a teen and now live in Belfast at 22. I've visited every state on the East Coast and been over to Texas...of all the places I've been and seen Maine is the place I liked most and will probably always be my home. When my fiance graduates from Husson, I want to visit the West Coast and some other places for a while, but I plan to come back here.

reindeerlady will become famous soon enoughreindeerlady will become famous soon enoughreindeerlady will become famous soon enough
And now you all know what it's like to live in most of Vermont! People like this breeze in (going at least 70mph) with the equivalent of a small fortune up here, buy up property, then proceed to act like those of us already here are both beneath and subject to them. Only those of us who can't afford to out-buy them are leaving, leaving less of us and more of them. It raises the blood pressure. I am convinced that this sort of mentality just doesn't see itself in the mirror! Maybe it's that thing called karma - I'm wondering if the American Indians don't find this all pathetically amusing. If we are fortunate enough to buy a home in Northern Maine, We will look for a relatively quiet place, but would never dream of causing a fuss, sue, or otherwise make an ass of myself with our new neighbors. Stay in the background and learn how to behave should be the ground rules, I'm thinking.

mainebrokerman has a brilliant future
mainebrokerman has a brilliant future
in the past few months ive spent quite a bit of time downeast, no one knows me, but im quick to say hello to folks i dont know and i find downeast no different than up in the county (aroostook), rangeley (western maine) wells (southern maine) and dexter (central maine), 99% of all mainers that i greet , always say hello back, or quick with some idle chatter, tho if anything some older folks will give me a double-take ,,not say anything,,probly wondering if they should know me,(ive had that blank stare too, someone will say hi and my name, and i cant recognize them at the moment)
most mainers do realize the more folks that move to town from away, the more it does help the local economy, particularly, carpenters, painters, landscapers, mechanics, plumbers, etc,
i dont expect anyone that i dont know to be overly friendly, everyone has a bad day, or are stressed at times,,as we all are, and there are always a couple bad apples in any bushel, but that doesnt make the whole bushel tainted.

i was in machias, jonesport, columbia falls, and sullivan in the past couple days and found the folks very friendly!!
