To: Starwalker & y200: This is exactly why Maine is loved so much! Just for what you expressed you'd like to change. If you change it you'll lose the serenity, the Down Mainers friendliness or (lack of), their ability to tell you just the way it is and if you don't like it....tough. When in Rome.............!

Reread what I wrote... I DO NOT WANT TO CHANGE MAINE!!! this is why I came here... for the lifestyle even though it is at odds with what I do to make a living.
I coulda stayed in NC and died of the heat or I could have moved to Portland (Gods know that is where all the jobs in my field ARE... )but I did NOT want to be in a city, even in Maine.
Just because I said I have "whiplash" when I unplug from work and walk out into the firefly-filled night does in no way say nor imply that I want to change anything about the place I live (well... I do want to find a place to buy, which should say I want to stay here, eh?) It was simply an observation of the difference between where I live (rural Maine) and where I make my living (the virtual fast lane).

I have been here 10 years and I moved here from CT. I just signed a contract on my house and I am moving back to CT to be near friends and family. As someone else said - nice place to visit - I don't want to live here.

I'm sorry things didn't work out ChristineL. I wish you the best.
I moved to a part of maine that I didn't enjoy living in at all. Moving back to an area to be closer to my friends and family was such a relief ~ so I can understand.
Good luck to you ChristineL.

I'm an 11th generation Mainer originally from Old Town, Maine. My family migrated from Coventry and Saleby, England as Puritans. I think the original question was aimed more at recent in-migrants to Maine, but I thought I'd throw mine in anyway. Even in the good old days there were places to get away from and places to go to, though I guess the Indians weren't all that thrilled!
