I don't live in Maine (yet) and I only moved to Manhattan a year and a half ago, from a town of 100,000 in Mass. But I really, really want out. I think it is a good experience to live here because you realize in a jiffy what you don't want. Also, I'm young (20), and I change my mind easily. But I really, really don't want this anymore. Tonight, I was walking down the street with a friend and I realized just how crowded it was and how noisy. And how people feel so entitled. Maybe it's just NYC, but to me fast lane = cramped, confined, no room to be an individual. All the things you love about Maine, they do not exist here.

Well there are cities with 10,000 people per square mile, I think the record is ~13,000 people per square mile.
Greatly different from 6 or 8 people per square mile.
The differences between urban and rural are many.

[quote=starwalker;3583203]Well said, Seaglass. I am one of the rank newbies to Maine... been here less than 2 months. I moved here from the "other" down east (NC) which has much culture in common with traditional Maine -- including, unfortunately, the summer people and folks like you rail about and I "got it" rather quickly when I moved there, largely thanks to having fallen in with someone like you... a well-traveled, well-educated local gal who was the director of a large community museum that has, as its mission, helping preserve and share the importance of the traditional local ways.
oh how i wish to be one of you all!!! i lived on Beals in 2000 + not a day goes by that i don't think about a possible way to get back up permanantly!! i want it so badly it hurts! MAINE calls my soul on a daily basis.
i went to the Blue Hill Fair in 2000 + loved it, the town took my breath away!!
i wish all you "Maineahs" a lovely holiday season, you are in truly, the most beautiful place in the whole world!

Promises, promises.
We will be up once the kid is out of college and the nest egg is sufficient enough to be to DH's liking.

I was born out to Aida Maloney's place and grew up down in Luebc in the 50s. I went away to make a living. Now I am considering retiring to Lubec. What I would change is the meddling with the fishing. It seems as though making a livelihood has been "regulated” out of existence. I could tell the stories you have all likely heard about the factories and smoke sheds being shoulder to shoulder and the bountiful beaches and flats, but one thing is for sure, they cant stop the narrows or the old sow so may be that will be enough to bring me back.

Here ya go mainebrokerman: Old Sow Whirlpool Everything you didn't want to know about it. Most of 'em true I imagine. I don't know as anyone has died there but quite a few got caught and scared out of their wits. A Canadian cutter got caught there back in the 1930s I think. Spent a lot of time and considerable fuel getting back out.
