So we have lived here a couple years now and I noticed that quite a few Mainers back their cars into parking spots. This is done in small cramped lots and lots where there is plenty of room to back out. Is this a quick exit strategy or something to do with snow? I have been meaning to ask since we got here. I understand the "pull-through" but not backing in as it seems to take longer. Any thoughts?

I grew up in FL, so I hear ya. Plates on both ends of the car here, so no chance of that becoming law.
Now the jump start thing makes sense. That never occurred to me since it seems to be brand new cars and old cars a like. Habit I guess, mystery solved!

No idea... but can you believe how small some of the parking spots are here? I have no visual memory, which screws up my ability to figure out where my car is when i'm parking and the small spaces really mess with me.

ah! but someone else may need a jump or it might get cold enough to need one or you could leave your lights on (I've done it )

easier to get out if you get plowed in, better visibility driving out than backing out---makes perfect sense to me!

We assumed it had something to do with the snow and cold weather, but noticed it year round. So just habit the rest of the year I guess. We keep our driveway clear of snow but the plows do create that big mound at the end. Even with 4x4 it can be a pain to get over in reverse.

One never knows when a "beer run" is needed. This just insures that the "sober" runner won't back into your house.
