What's Maine like? Weather, family stuff, etc.
I've never been even for a visit to Maine. What is the weather like in the summer and winter? Do you get a lot of snow or rain? Is it dry or humid in summer?
We're researching states to find out which ones we might move to next summer.

You came to the right place. We have four real seasons with great summers, awesome fall foliage, real winters and spring is just starting. There are endless outdoor recreational opportunities.
In the summer it gets into the 80s sometimes. Humidities are generally low. It's rare to have a 90 degree day.

Here on the coast summer can be quite humid. Mold and mildew are a problem in the summer due to the high humidity. From fall through winter though humidity is low(because everything is frozen). Last winter we had what I would term an above average snowfall. There is still snow on the ground in Northern Maine though along the coast it is finally gone even out of the woods. Generally we will have snow in December lasting through March or early April. Summer on the coast is absolutely beautiful. The cold Atlantic provides natural air conditioning. When the land heats up in the morning the warm air rising draws cool air in from the ocean. They call it a sea breeze. The sea breeze will generally lower the temperature along the immediate coast to about 4-6 miles inland by about fifteen degrees. It's not great in the spring when you're looking for it to warm up, though when it's 85 degrees in July in Lewiston it will be 70 here in Freeport. We get a moderate amount of rain. It varies from year to year. Some years you'd think it was the Pacific North West around here and other years we have true droughts. The one thing people from other states remark on when coming to Maine for the first time are the trees. We have countless millions of them. Large cleared areas are few and far between here. The land is all trees! Many varieties abound here. Maine is "The Pine Tree State " for a reason! Along with the pines you'll find Cedar,Hemlock,Spruce, Fir, and hardwoods like Maple (the fiery foliage trees),Oak,Beech,Ash,Cherry,
and a whole host of semi hard woods like Poplar,Birch and and others. The abundance of trees here really makes Maine unique to even the other New England States.
Maine also has thousands of lakes, ponds, rivers and streams. There is some body of water within a couple of miles of where ever you are in Maine. From Sebago in the south to Moosehead in the north and the thousands of smaller lakes and ponds in between and further north and east. There's no shortage of water in Maine. Plan a trip and come check out Maine ...you won't be sorry and if you're like most people you'll instantly fall in love with Maine.

Maine has a humid continental climate with four well defined seasons. Coastal Maine is mild for its far northern Latitude- with pleasant fairly long Summers, and autumns-with moderate to cold winters of average length for this climate and latitude. Springs are slow to arrive.
As one ventures further from the coast- winters can become more severe.

For me, it's the best summers. Not to humid at all.
Autumn is lovly here.
Of course it should snow for the month of December and as soon as "the holiday" is over.. bam~spring flowers would be greatttt!
But sometimes our wintery weather takes a little longer getting here or leaving here. Depends on which way "ole man winter" is feeling.
As I get older.. I am minding those cold days.
Family... is important. I love my girls and I hope they will want to "come home to Maine for all there holidays." ( if they do move away)

Old Maine saying: If you can't stand the winters, you don't deserve the summers.

I think it's changed now to .. "If you can't afford the winters...
Something along those lines.
