Black Fly Reports
Maine Nature News reports the status of black flies during this dreaded season. This year's reports started yesterday. I update it before publishing on Tuesdays. There aren't a lot of reports this week but they might be useful to someone.

Can I just report that there was more than one black fly in Androscoggin County a week ago today. My son and I were fishing and were swarmed like nobodys business! They drove me into the car as I wasn't able to smoke enough cigarettes to drive them away! Next time we're bringing cigars.

There was more than one here today. I made two trips to the store for bug spray. The first one didn't work and it was worth making the second trip.

They are out. I saw my first one yesterday and several today. They are not biting yet, but it won't be long.
I like Ben's 100 best. It is 100% DEET. Repel is good too. Don't get it in your eyes or touch your good camera with your hands after applying anything with DEET in it.

I got Off! Deep Woods. It's 25% Deet. I'll start using a soap that contains citronella today. When I shampoo with it the black flies don't swarm around my head as badly. Except for my hair it lasts only until noon though and then it's time to break out the bug spray.

Many guides "go on the vitamin". They take large doses vitamin B1 during black fly season. It makes you taste terrible to black flies. There is a slight after taste you'll experience, but it's worth it. I learned this from a guide from the Adirondacks who wears short sleeved shirts in June. I've seen him do it. He does not get bitten.

Well.. I was live from the scene of the first "attack" in Washington County
... "Husband and children ran towards the house while screaming & waving their arms in a crazy like manner.
Their screams were broken English which translated into something like...
Aww MOM... BUG SPRAY"

On Sunday we went and got a cache out by Rocky Lake (first to find even!!) and we were swarmed, but not bitten. They drove Jake right back to the Jeep, not a small accomplishment!!
